Non-contact boxing classes help reduce and even delay the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
There are many ways in which People with Parkinson’s disease (PwP’s) can enhance their quality of life. Non-contact boxing has been proven to build their strength and improve speed, flexibility, agility, muscular endurance, accuracy, balance, footwork and hand-eye co-ordination.
A few years ago a survey by sports channel ESPN was commissioned to determine the toughest and most demanding sport in the world. It was found that boxing rated No.1 (and fishing was No.60). Boxing requires the greatest all round levels of fitness, aerobic endurance, strength, power, speed, agility and flexibility.
The literature tells us more and more that forced, repetitive and complex exercises result in increased brain plasticity and may be neuro-protective, culminating in slowing down symptoms in Pd. This is exactly what the KOPD Boxing Program aims to provide.
By exercising with our coaches you can start to feel and function better, lesson your symptoms and thereby lead a healthier and happier life no matter at what stage of the disease you are. You can progress at your own pace. Exercise is an important component of life for people with neuro-degenerative diseases such as Pd, whether it covers gross or fine motor skills, core strength or balance. It can have a positive effect on one’s range of motion, flexibility, posture, gait and general daily living activities.
…and Boxing is a great stress reliever and confidence booster as well as being FUN.
The KOPD Boxing Program has developed in 3 years from a 12 person, 6 week trial to now having graded well over 100 people with Parkinson’s disease
